The Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) allows you to work in Australia for an approved employer in a nominated occupation. It replaced the former Temporary Skill Shortage branding but remains subclass 482.
Irish citizens with a genuine job offer from an Australian sponsor use this pathway when the role meets current occupation list and salary requirements.
Key requirements
Your employer must be an approved sponsor and nominate you for an eligible occupation. You must demonstrate you have the skills, qualifications and experience for the role, and meet English language requirements.
The Department sets income thresholds and occupation lists that change over time. Your employer and the nominated stream (Specialist Skills, Core Skills or Labour Agreement) determine which rules apply.
Typical steps
- Australian employer becomes or uses an approved sponsor
- Employer lodges a nomination for your role and occupation
- You lodge the subclass 482 visa application linked to that nomination
- Health and character checks if required
Pathways to permanent residency
Some 482 holders may later transition to permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) or other skilled migration pathways, depending on occupation, employer, stream and policy at the time of application.
