The Embassy of Ireland in Canberra represents Ireland in Australia. Irish citizens in Australia can access consular services through the embassy and consulates — but not Australian visa processing.

The embassy handles diplomatic relations and consular services for Irish citizens, including passport applications, emergency assistance, and notarial services where offered.

Opening hours, appointment requirements and the range of services offered vary by location, and honorary consulates typically do fewer things than the embassy. Check the official Department of Foreign Affairs website before travelling, especially if that means an interstate flight.

Renewing your Irish passport from Australia

This is the most common reason Irish citizens in Australia deal with the embassy, and for most people it does not require a visit.

Adult renewals can generally be done online through the Department of Foreign Affairs Passport Online service from anywhere in the world. You complete the application online, post your current passport, and the new one is issued and sent to you.

Two things to plan around:

• Allow time. Overseas renewals take longer than renewals within Ireland, and you will be without your passport for part of the process. Do not start a renewal a fortnight before you intend to fly.
• Check your visa's requirements first. Some Australian visas require a passport valid for a certain period, and you cannot travel on an expired one regardless of your visa.

First-time applications, applications for children, and replacements for lost or stolen passports have different processes and may require documents to be witnessed.

After you renew: update your Australian visa records

This is the step people miss, and it causes problems at the airport rather than at the embassy.

Australian visas are linked electronically to the passport you applied with. There is no sticker or label in your passport — the visa exists as a record against that passport number. When you get a new passport, that link no longer matches the document you are carrying.

Your visa is still valid. But you need to tell the Department of Home Affairs about the new passport, normally through your ImmiAccount or by lodging form 929, Change of address and/or passport details.

It is free and takes minutes. Skipping it means an airline can find no valid visa against your new passport and deny you boarding.

Two visa-specific notes:

• eVisitor holders. A new passport means applying for a new eVisitor. It is free, but it is a fresh application rather than an update, so do not renew your passport immediately before a trip.
• Working Holiday, student and sponsored visa holders. Update your passport details against the existing visa. Do it as soon as the new passport arrives.

What the embassy can help with

• Irish passport applications and renewals
• Emergency travel documents if your passport is lost or stolen
• Assistance if you are hospitalised, arrested or the victim of a serious crime
• Help contacting family in an emergency
• Notarial and document services, where offered at that location
• Registration of births, deaths and marriages abroad in some circumstances

What it cannot do

Consular assistance is narrower than people expect. The embassy cannot:

• Pay your medical bills, legal fees, fines or travel costs
• Intervene in Australian court proceedings, police matters or immigration decisions
• Secure your release from prison or get charges dropped
• Find you work, accommodation or a visa
• Process, expedite or influence an Australian visa application

That last point matters. If an Australian visa application is delayed or refused, the Irish Embassy has no standing in it. The Department of Home Affairs is the only body involved.

If your passport is lost or stolen

1. Report it to the Australian police and keep the report reference.
2. Contact the embassy or your nearest consulate.
3. Arrange either a replacement passport or, if you must travel urgently, an emergency travel document.
4. Once you have the new document, update your Australian visa records as above.

Report it promptly even if you are not travelling soon, because a lost Irish passport can be used fraudulently.
